Bangkok Sights

Democracy Monument, Bangkok

There are plenty of things to do in Bangkok, some are well known and on the well trodden path, whilst others are a little less clich? and ideal for those with a sense of adventure. Whatever your taste, you can be assured of being able to find enough places to visit to fill every day of your stay in Thailand?s capital.

The most famous and popular tourist attraction is, of course, the Grand Palace. If you visit Bangkok then you simply must visit the palace. Don?t worry about how much of a tourist trap people say it is, it is popular for a reason. If you leave it off of your itinerary then you will really be missing out on something. The palace is an architectural delight and will amaze even the most discerning tourist. It also houses the Emerald Buddha, which has come to be the most revered Buddha image in all of Thailand. The best thing to do is arrive early before the throngs of other curious visitors arrive. It will never be a completely desolate experience, but you will do well to avoid the masses.

Thailand is famed for its temples and Buddha images. They are scattered throughout the city and can be easily reached by taxi, tuk tuk, bus or boat. Some notable temples include Wat Arun and Wat Pho. If you are a temple fiend then see if you can get a tuk tuk driver to take you on a whirlwind tour of all of the best locations. Some of the Buddha images are really quite breathtaking in their majesty.

If you are a fan of shopping then you have come to the right place. The Golden Mile, which starts at MBK and ends somewhere around Central Chidlom, is a strip of large, internationally renowned malls, all within walking distance of each other. Not only that, but they are all linked by an elevated walkway so your feet don?t even have to hit the ground to experience the Mile. Visitors will be able to find all of their shopping desires met, from mobiles phones to the most luxurious of designer jewelry, it?s all here in these top quality malls.

Fans of markets will also be pleasantly surprised. Chatuchak weekend market is a sprawling mass of countless stalls selling every conceivable item under the sun, from cheap t-shirts to pet turtles, it has to be seen to be believed. Slightly less intimidating is the Suan Lum night bazaar where visitors are treated to a variety of stalls as well as an excellent food court complete with local bands and late night drinking.

To get a real feel of the city, one of the best things to do is to devote a whole day (or more) to seeing Bangkok by the way people used to see it. Bangkok was once known as the Venice of the East for a reason. Jump on a river boat and see where you end up. It?s immeasurably fun to explore the city by hopping on and off the river boats, and it?s surprisingly cheap. You can get to the grand palace and various temple destinations form the river and you will get to see a side of Bangkok that most people miss. There is also a pier located conveniently near the Saphan Taksin skytrain. station.
